Computers can be a very essential part to the learning experience of a student. I agree with the chapter in the idea that the student should learn how to use the computer as a tool for his educational experience, and not learn all the tools on the computer-- as this can be a wealth of useless information. The computer should be a cognitive tool, and not the ONLY tool that the student uses in his education. It would be a shame if computers were the ONLY means of obtaining knowledge, making books, newspapers, maps, etc... obsolete. I also agree that teachers should be well versed in the basic operating skills it takes to do regular tasks... not being taught by the students, as the chapter points out.
Computers will be used in my classroom for lectures with power point. I believe in creating a visual environment for transmitting information. The instructional model provides an effective way of doing this and computer technology is going to be a big part of my classroom, as long as I am in a district or a school that has that capability.
I am very excited about being an education major. I finally found something that I am passionate about and love being around middle school and high school aged teens. I can't wait to get out there and get kids THINKING and not RECITING something that they had to memorize. It can be suprising to hear some of the profound things that a middle school student will come up with. All they need is an environment where they can feel free to share without fear of rebuke or of being looked at as insignificant.
